The purpose of this project is to understand the symbols in the book To Kill A Mockingbird. A symbol is something that represents or stands for something else. A motif is a reoccurring event. Motifs hold significance to a plot. Mockingbird, morphodite, Time Johnson, and flowers are symbols in the book. All of these symbols are very important to understand in the story.
The symbol Mockingbird represents innocence. In the story To Kill A Mockingbird their are several characters that are innocent. Tom Robinson was innocent in the trial but he was guilty. Scout is young and doesn't know about some of the bad things that are happening in the book. Walter Cunningham is innocent because he doesn't take money that he can't pay back. Boo seems like a bad guy at first but he ends up saving Scout and Jem.
The symbol Morphodie represents a person of change. Scout and Jem were innocent at first and didn't understand why things were the way they were. When they see the trial they see all the evil in people. Boo hasn't came out of his house for 15 years but he finally comes out to help the children. There is a lot of change in To Kill A Mockingbird.
The symbol Tim Johnson represents evil. Tim Johnson is a rabid dog that they shot. Bob Ewell is a very evil man. He lied in court about his daughter being raped, he beat his daughter, and tried to hurt Scout and Jem. In the book society is also evil. Society is racist and even though Tom Robinson is not guilty, they said that he was just because he is black.
The symbol flowers represents family. Family is very important in this book. There are 3 types of flowers - Azaleas, Camellias, Geraniums. Azaleas are the flowers that Miss Maudie has in the story. She protects her flowers like she would protect her children. The Camellias are Mrs Dubose's flowers. Her Camellias are very precious to her and she takes very good care of them. Mayella's flowers are the Geraniums. These flowers can take care of themselves. Mayella does not take good care of her siblings in the book.
